AFL
Every Thursday morning for the rest of this term we will be learning how to play AFL (Australian football league). We had our first session last week and I have to say it was better than what I thought it would be. The instructor gave us a brief explanation about the game, points, tackling etc. and to me it sounds like rugby but rugby players would probably strongly disagree with me. We were taught a skill called a drop punt which basically seems like a drop kick but it had to go straight (which I kinda failed at) and we had to make sure that our arms weren't bent, the laces were facing away from us and that the crosses on either end of the ball were facing up and down. They gave these rules catchphrases like arrow arms and laces away from faces. We had a go practicing these drop punts and my ones pretty much went all over the place (including over the fence which resulted with an angry instructor). I was partnered with Imogen and we caught about 2 or 3 in a row then we had to try different styles like one handed and non-dominant foot kicking drop punts. The three main things that I learnt in the session were that you are allowed everywhere around the field in an AFL game, AFL is a tackle game and how to do a successful drop punt. I'm looking forward to the future sessions :)
